Why use Los Senderos Studio?

Our target clientele are the new and upcoming artists, particularly those singers and bands on a limited budget. For that reason we are keeping our rates as low as possible. We are one of the lowest-priced studios in Central Texas. The hourly rate at some studios is what we charge for a four-hour recording session. So what will you be giving up if you use Los Senderos Studio?

First, we are a very small studio. Our entire studio can fit into the control room of some larger studios. Although we cannot handle a 25-piece orchestra, we can easily fit a five-piece band into our live room. On the other hand most recordings today are made by tracking each part separately. So accommodating even a larger band really should be no problem. And many musicians like the intimacy of our small studio.

Pro Tools Second, our studio is all-digital. We do not have a large 16-track tape recorder. Is that really a disadvantage? Since almost all recordings today are done digitally, you will probably never miss the hassles of working with a tape recorder. However, some people still like the distortions introduced by recording to tape (sometimes called "warmth"). If you are one of them, then I recommend you use another studio that still uses tape recorders. By the way, there are other ways of creating warmth on a recording.

Third, we use the LE version of Pro Tools, rather than the more expensive HD version. You can still do nearly everything with LE that you can with HD with only a very few exceptions. We can still record up to 16 channels simultaneously although we seldom record more than eight at a time. We have never recorded more than 12 tracks simultaneously. We are limited to a maximum of 64 tracks. Typically most recordings hardly ever exceed 24 tracks. Possibly the biggest limitation to LE is that we can handle only one headphone mix at a time, which has rarely been a problem. We still have all the editing and audio file handling capabilities for which Pro Tools is famous. And we are also using Pro Tools 8, the latest version of the popular software—some of the larger studios have not yet upgraded to 8.

What you will not be giving up is high quality productions. We have a very nice collection of highly rated microphones to fit a variety of applications. From vocals to acoustic guitars to drums and everything in between, we can capture a very clean and accurate sound. We also have comfortable, high quality headphones that accurately reproduce the sounds you are monitoring. Our control room monitors have extremely smooth and precise response curves. Our live room and control room are sonically treated to minimize reverberations and sound imperfections. We also have a sonically-deadened vocal booth, that allows you to record vocals dry and then add effects later. All of these items contribute to making a good sounding recording. Just listen to recorded samples on our music samples page.

Possibly our biggest advantage is our location. We are located in the Hill Country. So if you are in Dripping Springs, Blanco, Marble Falls, or Johnson City, we are just a short drive away. But what if you are in Austin or San Antonio? We provide a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax in a studio located on forty acres with beautiful Hill Country vistas. We've had bands come from as far away as the Brownsville area. It's worth the drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my music be mixed in your studio?
Yes, we can mix your tracks. Just bring your recording files from your previous studio and we can take it from there. You will need .wav files of each track.

What does the mixing process involve?
Once the recording process is complete, the mixing process begins. Entire books have been written on how to mix a music track. So here is the short answer. I recommend doing an inital mix (sometimes called a "rough" mix) first. Then bounce the track to a CD. Take it home with you. Listen to it on the CD player in your car or truck. Play it on your home stereo. As you do this, listen to how it sounds. Does it sound just like you want it? Is the soundstage set properly? Are you hearing all the instruments? Is the vocal too loud or drowned out by the instruments? Are the levels consistent? Make notes on everything that needs to be changed. Then come back into the studio and we can make the necessary adjustments for the final mix. You may need to do this more than one time to get everything just exactly right.

In the Studio

This past month we had two artists returning to Los Senderos Studio. First J. W. Wright, who recorded in our studio previously with his band Joker, worked on a solo project on which he played acoustic guitar, electric guitar, dobro, and sang. After we made a rough mix, Grammy award-winning producer Lloyd Maynes listened to it and gave him some constructive insights. So J. W. will probably be back soon to make a few minor changes.

Ryan and Dorothy Trimble were back in the studio recently. Previously they recorded several all acoustic tracks. This time they added an electric guitar and re-recorded several of the tracks as well as adding one new song. Dorothy wrote all the songs and sang them. They will be back in the studio soon to mix the tracks.
