A Little Magic in the Studio

We were recently mixing a song recorded in our studio. The last verse talked about someone's feelings as they left a cemetery. The singer-songwriter who had written and performed the song asked if we could add the sound of a twenty-one-gun salute to that verse. I said it should be no problem.

21-Gun Salute The artist had brought his 12-gauge shot gun and wanted to record that. Since our studio is out in the country,  there was no problem firing off a few rounds. So we set up a microphone and outfitted the singer with headphones (so he could fire the gun at the appropriate spots).  As we played back the song, we recorded the shotgun being fired. When we finished, everyone rushed back into the control room to listen to the result. We were somewhat disappointed as the sound was very underwhelming. Someone said it sounded like popping corn.

That's when I recalled something that Hollywood had figured out a long time ago. A gunshot is so loud that when its level is reduced to the point where it can be used in a recording, it sounds like a small pop. That's why gunshots in a reality police show sound anemic—nothing like the sound of gun fire in your favorite cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians movies. Having done Having done sound effects much earlier in my career, I knew that many sound effects are created by using objects other than the actual object you are trying to make them sound like. That's what foley studios in Hollywood do—create and record sound effects.

So we went out and got two wooden boards and took them back into the studio. We then recorded the sound of the boards being slapped together. After adding some reverb and little delay, we had the sound of a 21-gun salute. To say the least, our client was happy. That's a bit of studio magic.

We Now Offer
CD Duplication Services

Los Senderos Studio recently acquied a CD duplicator. That means we can now offer CD duplication services in addition to our studio recording services. This machine will duplicate and print the label on a CD or DVD. It is designed for small quantities of discs--normally in the range of 50 to 250 CDs. CD Duplication (If you need larger quantities, CD replication is the best way to go. If you need that service, we cannot do it in-house, but we can arrange to have it done for you.)

We feel this new service will provide for a turn-key program that will be a benefit to many artists and bands who want to come into the studio, record a few songs, and produce a few dozen CDs. So whether you are in the need  of some demo CDs or some CDs to sell at your gigs, we can now do that for you. This service is so new that we don't even have it on our web site yet. So call us if you need a quote. We can make CDs for you even if you recorded your tracks somewhere else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I have some cash, but not enough to pay for the recording time I need. Can I charge the difference on a credit card?

A. Certainly. We accept Visa, MasterCard, and Discover credit cards. We accept cash and checks up to $1,000 with proper identification. We try to make it easy on everyone.

Q. What is the difference between CD duplication and CD replication?
A. CD duplication is the process of making a copy of a CD using a recordable CD such as a CD-R. Duplication machines reproduce small quantities (anywhere from 10 to 250 or more CDs) by loading blank CD-Rs into a machine and copying the master. For small quantities, this is the least expensive method of making CDs. However, for large quantities, a glass master is created from which multiple copies can be stamped. The finished product is an audio CD (not a CD-R) just like you buy in record stores. This process is called replication. For large quantities, this is the best way to go because your cost per CD is lower.
