Have things really changed that much?
While cleaning out a storage room recently, I came across a July 1988 issue of Recording magazine. If you're like me, 1988 doesn't sound like all that long ago, but it has been more than two decades since that issue was published. I later spent some time to see what was going on the recording industry back in 1988. Here are some interesting observations.
That issue had several ads for multi-track cassette recorders. Another ad touted a cassette duplicator that could duplicate up to 12 cassettes at a time. One company claimed that they were first to import DAT (digital audio tape) recorders into the United States. One of the major pressing plants (which is still in existence) advertised that they press vinyl records, duplicate cassettes, and now produce compact discs. One note of interest is that not a single ad listed a website or email address. While many of the ads were not much different from those of today offering microphones, recording consoles, equalizers, limiters, and compressors—most of the same gear found in current magazines—almost all of the equipment was analog. Only one ad mentioned the word "digital." Two computers were in evidence with one ad for an Atari and another offering an Apple II.
One of the most interesting articles was entitled "A Hard Disk Recording Primer" and subtitled "The ABC's of the newest recording medium." Most of the article was spent discussing how an analog audio signal is converted into digital data. It concluded by noting that most hard disks have a capacity of 20 megabytes which "gives us over 226 seconds of sound - more than enough for a three-minute pop tune >in mono." I guess things have change somewhat in the last twenty years.

True Grit comes to Blanco
For three days this month, a film crew shot scenes for the remake of the movie True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. While most of the movie is being being made elsewhere (we've been told in Granger, Texas), the courtroom scene is being shot at the old county courthouse in Blanco. It was interesting to watch the process. In the picture at right, you can see many of the extras biding their time waiting to be called into the courtroom. There were two or three dozen men dressed in period costume standing around for hours.
In the picture below you can see specialized cherry pickers with extremely bright lights that are shining on the second-story windows of the courthouse to simulate natural sunlight streaming into the old courtroom.
While we did not get a chance to see any of the stars of the movie, several of the local residents told us they did. So what does all this have to do with a recording studio? Well, nothing. We just thought it was something interesting going on just a few miles down the road from our studio.
By the way, the wild flowers in the picture at the top of this newsletter was taken just a few steps outside the studio. It's a beautiful time of year in the Hill Country. It would be a nice place to make your next recording.

New Content on the Website
As many of you know, I used to own a body shop in South Austin. As a businessman with a website, you are frequently trying to come up with new content--something that will provide value to potential clients while driving additional traffic to the website. After all, a website with no traffic is kind of useless.
One day I came up with the idea to put a glossary of body shop terms on the site. It turned out to be a hit, with several customers telling me how helpful it was in explaining shop terms that were unfamiliar to them.
Recently I decided that a glossary of recording studio terms would probably be a good idea as well. It took me only two or three days to create the glossary for the shop. So when I was still working on the new glossary four weeks later, I felt like I had bitten off a little too much. It turns out that I was able to compile a list of 107 terms related to the body shop business, but I came up with 1,043 entries related to recording studios--over 50 printed pages.
While it is probably not something you would want to sit down and read from top to bottom, I think there will probably be a time when you hear an unfamiliar studio term that you will want to look up. I hope you will think of this resource when that happens. Please check out the Los Senderos Studio glossary.

In the Studio
We recently recorded a reggae group called the Crucial Prophets, who laid down two instrumentals. I hope to have samples of their music posted on the website soon.
We also had a young man by the name of Jett Lang, who came in to the studio to record a voice over demo. He left the studio with a CD containing three samples of his work. He is planning to come back again soon and do some more work.
