Missing payments due you?
Have any of your recordings been played on the Internet lately? If so, did you get paid? If not, then you need to register with Sound Exchange.
Sound Exchange is a non-profit performance rights organization that was designated by the U. S. Copyright office to collect and distribute digital performance royalties. The people who stream digital recording, such as Internet radio, cable music channels, satellite radio, and other digital services, are called service providers. Service providers are now required to pay royalties on the music they play. Most songwriters already know about and have signed up with performance rights groups such as BMI, ASCAP, or SESAC. However, these organizations collect and distribute royalties only for songwriters and their publishers, but not for performers and owners of the recording copyright. That's where Sound Exchange comes in.
If an artist records a song that is played on one of the digital services, Sound Exchange will pay 50% of the royalties collected to the recording copyright owner (usually the label), 45% to the artist, and 5% to a fund for backup singers and session players. If the artist is independent (has no label) and owns the recording copyright, then 95% of the royalties are paid directly to the artist.
Service providers are required to send periodic listings of the recordings they have played along with a payment of the royalties that are due. Sound Exchange uses this information to determine who is owed royalties and sends out checks accordingly. However, to receive your checks, you must be registered with Sound Exchange. If any of your recordings have been played by Service Providers, you may have money already waiting for you. To register, go to SoundExchange.com. When you do, make sure you have a voided bank check, a scanned copy of your driver's license or passport, and a completed IRS form W9.
Keep in mind that most recordings have two copyrights: one for the song and one for the actual recording. These are designated on recordings by a C in a circle (©) and by a P in a circle ( ) respectively. The first is handled by BMI, ASCAP, and SESAC, while the second is handled by Sound Exchange.
Currently royalties are paid only on the digital services, but there is a bill before Congress to require radio stations to pay the same royalties. Obviously, the stations are lobbying against this as it will significantly increase the cost of their operations. However, if the bill does become law, you the artist may be entitled to additional revenues in the future.

What is a demo?
Demo is short for "demonstration." A demo is a recording that "demonstrates" what a song or artist sounds like. In the past demos were recorded mainly for one of two reasons: (1) for a band or artist to get a record deal or (2) for a songwriter to get his song recorded by a major artist. Quite often these demos were made very crudely with minimal instrumentation using home tape recorders or cassette recorders. Sometimes the demo was a way of providing a quick sketch of song to band mates to learn the song prior to performing it on stage or in the recording studio. Songwriters sometimes record a demo to provide to their publishers for copyright purposes.
Today there is a new reason to record a demo. Since many artists have chosen to be independent and not seek the benefits (or lack of benefits) of using a label, they record a demo that they can send to a club or venue owner to get bookings. In this case, a crude home-made recording is no longer sufficient. You want that booking agent to listen to your recording and say, "Wow, we gotta have that group!" If done right, that same demo CD can be used to give away or sell to your fans at gigs. It can also be posted on your MySpace page or uploaded to I-Tunes. So the quality has to be something you will be proud of.
With recording time at big commercial studios going for as much as $50 to $100 an hour, recording a demo can get very expensive. That is where we come in. Los Senderos Studio can give you that professional sound without the high cost. So if it's time for your group to record a demo, give us a call. We will be please to help you get a professional sounding CD without breaking the bank.

Recording Studio Glossary
If you read last month's newsletter, you are probably aware that we recently added a glossary of recording studio terms to our website. Well, if you Google "Recording Studio Glossary," you will see that the new glossary comes up on the first page. I think that's pretty amazing for brand new content like that.
By contrast, if you Google "Austin recording studios," Los Senderos Studio comes up on the second page. Not as good as we'd like, but considering that last year we were on page 14, I think we've improved our Google positioning significantly.
If you haven't already done so, check out the Los Senderos Studio glossary.

In the Studio
Dorothy and Ryan Trimble recently recorded several songs at Los Senderos Studio. Ryan is the former mayor of Blanco, Texas, and is now retired. Dorothy is the assistant librarian at the Blanco Library.
They recorded seven songs, all of them written by Dorothy. She is the vocalist and plays rhythm guitar, while Ryan plays lead guitar. They consider these recordings a kind of "rough draft." They are planning to come back to the studio soon and re-record the songs in a more polished fashion. Ryan is also planning to record some instrumental tracks.
