Tips for Vocalists

Tips for Vocalists*

Once you get in the studio, you want to make the best recording you can. These tips are for vocalists, but many of them can apply to the rest of the band as well. Also, be sure to check out tips before arriving at the studio and tips for recording sessions.

(1) Get a good rest the night before coming in. If your tired or sleepy, you will not give your best performance. Make sure your band mates are rested as well.

(2) Have your song well rehearsed. Be sure to have worked out all the kinks, so that your singing goes smoothly when you're in the studio.

(3) Wear something comfortable. Consider bringing your favorite sweater. Sometimes recording studios can be cooler than you're used to.

(4) Wear your hair up. If you have long hair, this will keep it out of your face and away from the microphone.

(5) Bring a notepad and pen. If you prefer, bring a tablet or small laptop to jot down notes.

(6) Take a breath and breathe deeply. Do this frequently. Use good vocal and breathing techniques.

(7) Bring a printed copy of your music or lyrics. That way you won't be stressed trying to remember the words. Share it with the engineer and producer so they can follow along.

(8) Bring your favorite beverage. Drink plenty of water, but not too cold. Ice water can restrict the vocal cords and make it more difficult to hit those high notes. Warm (not hot) tea with lemon and honey is often recommended for vocalists.

(9) Avoid drugs and alcohol. While some musicians claim it helps with their performance, it rarely does.

(10) Forget about the outside world. Don't fret over what your boyfriend/girlfriend/mom/parole officer said yesterday. Just concentrate on the task at hand.

(11) Get comfortable. After arriving at the studio, give yourself some time to relax and get comfortable. Chat with your bandmates, and establish a creative atmosphere.

(12) Arrange things to your liking. When you get in the vocal booth, turn down the lights or light candles and/or incense. Spread your lyric sheets out and tape or clip them to the music stand. (Turning pages in the studio is a no-no.)

(13) Have fun!

These tips will help you make the most of your recording session, and the result will show in the quality of your work. If you have not already done so, be sure to check out the tips before arriving at the studio.
